Tips to save on your heating bill this winter

JONESBORO, Ark- Temperatures over the past week have plunged, leaving many to turn up the thermostat. But that does not mean the heat has to increase your electricity bill.

Heating costs can account for fifty percent-yes- a whopping fifty percent of your monthly usage bill. Brandi Hinkle, Entergy Arkansas Communications Specialist, says your bill does not have to break the bank.

“There are some easy things you can do in your home right now to make it more energy efficient,” she said.

Temperatures hit single digits several times last week here in the region.

Hinkle says they’ve had customers seek out cost-saving measures, when it comes to their energy bills.

An inexpensive way to save? Look at your doors and windows.

“Seal up any leaks between your windows or doors. If you can see light, you can bet that air is escaping in and out,” she continues, “So, the air that you’ve heated up is going out and the cool air is coming in. So, use some weather stripping around doors and windows.”

Hinkle says one of the top ways to save is to conserve by turning your thermostat down to sixty-eight degrees.

“The higher you raise it the more your usage and therefore your bill will be,” she says, “It can increase anywhere from three to five to ten percent per degree, depending on how well your unit works.”

Adjusting your ceiling fans to make them turn clockwise will circulate the warm air as heat rises.

Hinkle says another way to avoid spikes in your bill is to enroll in level billing or options like picking the day you pay.

“What we do is take your average usage over the last 12 months and you pay that. It’s pretty much kind of a set rate that you don’t have any surprises, so you can better manage your bills,”

Hinkle says they have several programs and will work with customers who receive a higher energy bill.
