Red Wolves team up with Ashley Homestore for Furniture Giveaway

JONESBORO, Ark- Arkansas State University along with Ashely Homestore partnered together.
Gifting two families brand new furniture after theirs were damaged and destroyed in the March 28th Jonesboro tornado.
“So, when things are impacted with the tornado, with a natural disaster, Covid, really the year we’ve had in 2020 we wanted to jump in wherever we could. So, our store was destroyed as well, we, had to rebuild that. But, in the midst of that, we still wanted to be sure that we could take care of our community as well,” says Lauren Hamsley, Ashley Homestore community engagement coordinator.
As both families continue to rebuild and piece their lives back together after the tornado a-state sports properties and Ashley Homestore wanted to assist.
Helping both families back on their feet.
Gifting them all the furniture they need to fill their new home.
One recipient, Billy Curtis is still re-building his parents’ home after it was destroyed.
Not long after his father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away.
Curtis calls today, a blessing.
“It’s amazing. They’ve never had help like this. With dad being gone, it’s tough but, this is a blessing. It’s a big stress relief because now I don’t have to worry about getting them furniture. So, ya know….Once the house is 100% complete, get mom back in there,” he says.
The Curtis’ home is about 75% finished.
He says when they found out they were a recipient tears flooded their eyes.
The Curtis family received a dining room set among other furniture.
He says he’s thankful to be part of this community, as they stepped up to help him re-build after their insurance wouldn’t.
“A couple days after the tornado hit, I was over there trying to clean it up myself and, next thing I know there was pretty much a small army that showed up. At one point, there was probably thirty people helping,” according to Curtis.
One other recipient who did not want to be on camera also lost all their furniture in the tornado.
The family just moved into their new home they re-build from the ground up.
Inside now sits a living room set.
A-State coaches, employees, spirit squad were on hand to move the items into each home.
Arkansas State football coach Butch Jones says he’s honored to have a small part in today’s giveaway.
“It kinda [makes you] relive your family situation and just seeing the joy and seeing the gratitude they have. Just the joy of being a part of it and being able to give back to the community, which the community means so much to everyone,” says Jones.
Both families say they are thankful for the donation.
After a tough 2020 the new furniture is giving them the fresh start, they need.
