Paragould’s well known Collins Theater is preparing for some big-time changes
Paragould’s well known Collins Theater is preparing for some big-time changes.
The Collins Theater in Paragould is expanding and bringing in new shows for community residents. This is all following a very long and different 2020 pandemic year.
“We were dark, we were closed other than a few lived streamed events for over a year, so we’re really glad to get back in operation again,” Chairman of the board, Andy Fulkerson said.
The Paragould Regional Chamber Of Commerce held a chamber after hours where theater officials shared how they recovered from 2020.
The Collins Theater was built in 1925 and opened as a stage production and motion picture theater.
Fulkerson says they have bought 2 buildings next to the theater. The first building will be connected to the theater which will be called the Wessell building. In honor of Joe Wessell.
“Who is integral in the foundation for many years, and we want to honor him by naming that building after him. It’s going to be used as an overflow lobby area of the theater for when we have big shows,” Fulkerson said.
The Wessell building will be available to rent for special events as well as the 2 buildings. It will be used as an apartment to generate revenue for the theater.
“It’s going to be right next door to it and it good to control your environment and the building around you if you can and we were able to do that,” Fulkerson said.
Fulkerson said renovations for the new buildings haven’t started. They are getting bids from contractors but hope to start soon.
“When we have large shows, this lobby not all that big, and it gets pretty crowded, and restrooms get backed up so it’s going to be big for shows and other events too,” Fulkerson said.
