Jonesboro police ramp up patrol during holiday season

JONESBORO, Ark- While you're out shopping from store to store this holiday season, you might notice an increased law enforcement presence. Jonesboro Police ramp up patrol in popular shopping areas in town.

“We have so many visitors, so many people that are visiting their families and we just want them to feel safe in our community, that I’ve always felt my entire life, but I think it will just add to that,” Jonesboro Mayor Harold Copenhaver says.

The mayor has approved an additional 1,000 hours in police shifts to patrol highly trafficked shopping areas across Jonesboro.

He calls the safety move preemptive, as the most wonderful time of the year can be spoiled by a grinch.

“We found the financing in our budget to make that work. As we know there is an uptick in- this is an opportunity for criminals in a lot of ways, and we want to eliminate that.”

The city reminds the public to stay safe as they shop. Be aware of your surroundings, locked or unlocked, do not leave valuables in your vehicle, and shop with a friend or family member.

Jonesboro police and Mayor Copenhaver met on Monday to plan-out the increased presence. Shoppers can expect around a dozen additional officers at shopping centers in town.

“We’re going to have police officers in their units, they’ll be walking in different areas, we have it all laid out in different areas. We have six or seven different corridors,” he said.

The increased patrol presence will last through the holiday shopping season.
