HUB Homeless Resource Center announces date, prepares for reopening
DOWNTOWN JONESBORO, Ark- The HUB Homeless Resource Center will officially reopen next week. Northeast Arkansas News hears how they’re preparing.
The last time the HUB was fully open? March of 2020, but that will change next Tuesday, September 14, as they reopen their doors. Executive Director Kim Chase says the HUB will also have new amenities for guests to use.
“We closed our offices down in March 2020. However, we’ve offered our services throughout the pandemic. But we feel like now is the time even with the [Covid] variants,” says Kim Chase, HUB Homeless Resource Center executive director.
While the HUB’s been closed for 18 months, they continued to help those in need.
The non-profit started the Feed Local lunch program in April 2020, feeding guests every Tuesday and Thursday and, will continue the service.
The resource center had delayed the reopening, with hopes Covid would be behind us.
The HUB will also offer new resources for the homeless, including lockers for guests to store belongings in.
“Our homeless citizens are carrying everything with them, and so our lockers are available to store something that they don’t need to carry with them. We have a local gym who has been gracious and donated some showers to us, and so we write referrals,” she said.
The HUB and the gym will provide towels and hygiene products for the shower referral program.
They have also offered vaccine and Covid-19 testing clinics throughout the pandemic.
Chase says keeping volunteers and guests safe is their top priority as covid-19 cases continue to rise.
“We’ve been doing screenings- health screenings at the door; we take temperatures; ask about symptoms. We have required masks since throughout the pandemic. Even when the mandate ended, we still required masks,” said Chase.
Once they reopen on September 14, the Feed Local Program will operate under new lunch hours from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. and will transition into a grab-and-go service.
They are also looking for volunteers.
