Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas receives $3 million dollar donation

Updated: Mar 4

JONESBORO, Ark- One local non-profit is celebrating after receiving a multi-million-dollar donation.

The Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas recently receive a large donation totaling $3 million dollars. CEO Christie Jordan says the donation will go along away serving needy families in the region.

“It was- it was just very surreal and, we preceded with caution. Then when all of the details were revealed, we were just incredibly grateful to be included among the organizations Ms. Scott chose to give to,” says Jordan.

The donation comes from philanthropist, and author MacKenzie Scott, who is also the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

The foodbank was notified last November that an anonymous person wanted to donate a large gift but did not find the details out until Scott announced the news on her blog.

Jordan says they already have plans for how they will use Scotts donation.

“We’re going to be able to use these funds over the next several years to be able to purchase items that our agencies need that don’t get donated enough. And to secure fresh fruits and vegetables for distribution to people facing hunger in northeast Arkansas,” she says.

Scott and her team created a list of 6,490 charitable organizations before narrowing it down.

More than $4.1 billion dollars in donations will benefit 384 organizations across the United States and Puerto Rico.

The gift could not have come at a better time, as the need for food assistance in the region is rising.

“We’ve helped so many more and more families than we have ever before. Last year in 2020, we increased our distribution by an additional two million pounds. And we helped probably about ten thousand more families than we normally would.”

Jordan says it’s hard to say an accurate count of the number of meals this $3 million-dollar donation will provide.

But she says every dollar donated to the foodbank to northeast Arkansas provides four meals for a family in need.
