Downtown Jonesboro Alliance receives $25,000 grant
DOWNTOWN JONESBORO, Ark The Downtown Jonesboro Alliance received a large donation to help improve the downtown area.
The DJA accepted a $25,000 donation from Main Street Arkansas.
The money will be put back into the community- going towards the downtown beautification commission.
“We received this twenty-five thousand dollars from Main Street Arkansas and the Arkansas Department of Heritage,” says Executive director of the Downtown Jonesboro Alliance, Lindsey Ford-Wingo. “By being a Main Street program, we are under so many requirements, and if we meet the requirements, that is how we were able to receive this grant money.”
The DJA received the funding last year as well.
Ford-Wingo says they used it to purchase new lighting systems for the downtown and invested it back into local businesses by purchasing restaurant gift cards to distribute to members of the community.
This year the grant money will go towards improving downtown alleyways.
“We have already started and have already added $10,000 in the alleyway worth of lighting and, we plan to add more. So, our alleyways will be completely lit by the end of this year,” the director said.
By investing the $25,000 grant back into cleaning downtown alleyways she says it will benefit the community and its visitors.
“It’s very important to focus on our alleyways. We want people to enjoy their walk downtown and visit, shop, eat. We want all of our alleyways to be clean and beautiful for our visitors and, we also have people who live downtown.”
Several area residents say off-camera that they welcome the $25,000 grant to clean up downtown.
The DJA plans to announce more projects related to the grant funding soon.
