JONESBORO, Ark- For those at home with children interested in the medical field, you might want to pay attention to this story. Applications are open for NYIT Project H.E.A.R.T. (Health Education Advocacy Reflection and Training) summer program.
The free week-long program introduces high school students to the medical field. And with a focus on providing care in the Delta region.
“It’s just a fantastic opportunity for local high school students to find ways to get involved and explore careers in the medical field. And even some college exploration as well,” said Brent Owens, director of pipeline programs and regional recruitment for the medical school.
Project H.E.A.R.T. will take place June 13-16 on the NYITCOM campus at Arkansas State.
The free program is open to high school students entering the 11 and 12 grades.
NYIT student doctors serve as counselors as participants get an inside peek into the medical field.
“Everything from really quality hands-on experience to college prep to touring some of the hospitals and getting to be counseled by some of our medical students. So, it’s a really comprehensive medical camp where you’ll get a lot of things,” Owens said.
The free annual summer camp is made possible through a partnership with Arkansas State.
Owens says it works to further the school's mission of serving and providing medical care in underserved areas in Arkansas and the Delta region.
“Arkansas, in general, is very, towards the very bottom of the health discrepancy; pretty much every health discrepancy that you look at we’re bringing up the rear. But this is how we change that. If they do choose to go through the medical route of being a physician, that's why we’re here. And we can help them with that as well. At the end of the day, keeping students here that want to be here and, educating them so that they can stay here, that’s one hundred percent filling our mission here at NYIT.”
Applications are due April 22, and you can find them by clicking here- Project H.E.A.R.T: Mini Medical Summer Camp Application, June 13th -16th, 2022 (google.com)
