A-State, Ashley Homestore partner to donate furniture to veterans


JONESBORO, Ark- It was an exciting morning for veterans of the VFW Post 1991 as they received much-needed donations.


Ashley Homestore and Arkansas State University Athletics partnered up to give back. By to donated furniture to the Jonesboro Veterans of Foreign Wars Post-1991 this morning.


“[I] told ‘em what we were looking for, and I get a phone call saying, ‘be here on this day’,” said Post Commander Robert Murphy.


An Ashley truck rolled up to the VFW as Red Wolf athletic coaches and; the spirit squad moved furniture inside.


In total, two bookshelves, three lamps, and a table set to contribute to the missing man table into the facility. It honors fallen and missing military service members.


When everything moved virtually due to the pandemic, Post-1991 adapted by created a computer lab for its members. However, the space needed a few upgrades.


“During the pandemic, it presented some pretty challenging situations for some of the people. Some of the veterans, so the lighting, the lamps they provided will go into each cubicle. And will give the veteran more lighting to do what they need to do. In terms of study, create [a] resume, talk to the doctor via the internet,” Commander Murphy said.


Once the items arrived, the commander was speechless, looking at each piece.


“It was a wow factor. Completely unexpected, unanticipated, just we had no idea. And so, we were impressed. We were honored,”


Once the idea to donate furniture to local veterans came about, Ashley Homestore and A-State Athletics went to work.

As they plan to give back and say thank you to the service members who put their lives on the line for our freedom. A small comparison to the sacrifices they made. With the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks just around the corner.


“They play such a huge part in the foundation of our country and our community here in Jonesboro. To be able to do something like this and give back on behalf of Ashley Furniture and A-State athletics is really just a special moment and, we’re glad we were able to make it happen,” says John Finch, Arkansas State sports property general manager.


Commander Murphy says VFW members are excited and thankful for the donation.
