2021 Jonesboro Open kicks off at Disc Side of Heaven
JONESBORO, Ark- Some of the best disc golfers from around the world are descending on Jonesboro this weekend.
All for the 2021 Jonesboro Open.
The fifth annual Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open kicked off today at Disc Side of Heaven.
Tournament director Brad Pietz says they’re ready for an action-packed weekend after having to make adjustments last year due to the coronavirus.
“We were lucky enough last year to be a rescheduled event. But it was very subdued because we didn’t allow spectators out because of the Covid pandemic,” says Brad Pietz, Jonesboro Open tournament director. “This year there is just so much excitement ‘[be]cause people can come out and watch again. It’s fun to be a part of it.”
The Jonesboro Open is typically held in the spring each year, but the 2020 tournament was moved to October due to the coronavirus.
The tournament is split into two sections.
With 124 in the men's section and 30 competitors in the women's section are vying to take home the title as the winner.
Competitor and Greenwood, Arkansas native Kevin Jones say's being able to compete here in his home state means everything to him.
“I feel a lot of support coming around here being an Arkansas boy. Right now, I’m one of the only Arkansas boys that is on tour right now full-time for disc golf,” says Jones. “So, I feel a lot of weight. I feel like I’ve got a lot of people looking at me, and I would love to impress them. Playing on this course is a lot of fun. It’s a really long course that tests the longest throwers in the game to the fullest. It tests all their accuracy."
Pietz says contestants are excited to get back to Disc Side of Heaven, as it’s a large event in the disc golf pro circuit.
It also serves as an economic boost to Jonesboro.
“I saw this property and built the course. The whole idea was to bring the best plays in the world to Jonesboro to create an economic event and, it’s fun to see it come to fruition,” Pietz said.
The Jonesboro Open will run through Sunday, April 18th.
