Halloween in the Park coming to Walnut Ridge

With Halloween Saturday, Walnut Ridge was not able to host their annual trunk or treat on abbey road.

Walnut ridge has about 20 participants set to pass out candy bags but not in their traditional Halloween way. So instead of Christmas in The Park, it’s Halloween in The Park.

“COVID-19 has obviously taken its toll Worldwide, but you kind of see it first in the community that you live in and serve,” Walnut Ridge police Chief, Jordan Cooksey said.

Usually, the city hosts trunk or treat on abbey road, but due to covid-19 that could not happen.

Walnut ridge officials said it would be too crowed and unable to social distance. After meetings with the city first responders they still wanted to have something for the kids and community.

Which lead them to Halloween in The Park.

“They know that Halloween this year is going to be different community wide. There’s probably not going to be as many households participating in it and people that I’ve talked to have just been thankful to have something to come to,” Cooksey said.

They recommend, treat style prepackaged bags on trays for parents or children to take.

As a requirement from the Arkansas Department of Health those handing bagged candy must wear a mask and gloves.

There will be designated areas around the park loop road with an expansion to the ball field parking lot area, if needed.

“It was something, that was kind of our train of thought when we came up with it. We knew it we wouldn’t be able to do that and we knew we couldn’t do anything perfect but if we could do something to give to the community. So many things had been cancelled due to COVID-19 that it just seemed like something that the community would enjoy,” Cooksey said.

Halloween in the park begins tomorrow in Stewart Park from 5-7. For more information you can visit the City of Walnut Ridge on Facebook.
