Arkansas unemployment declines as pandemic continues

JONESBORO, Ark- Arkansas’ unemployment dropped from 7.4% to 7.3%. While it is heading in the right direction, that could change due to the pandemic.

“We’re beginning to see some places coming back, you’re beginning to see more businesses being announce that are coming into places that have been closed and have now been bought out by other places and, new businesses are opening in their place,” says A-State assistant finance professor, Philip Tew.

Tew says with people going out more and doing holiday shopping early, has an impact on the declining unemployment numbers.

With the holiday season around the corner, he says it will depend on how many people follow CDC guidelines to determine if unemployment will continue to decrease.

“You have people that have become relaxed in social distancing and relax when it comes to mask-wearing,” he says. “You could see that big spike occurring again and, you could see where they’re gonna have to go back and shut things down.”
