CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, Ark- The single parent scholarship fund distributed their awards but, staff and volunteers had to get creative with the ceremony, due to the pandemic.
Thirty-five single student parents received their scholarships last night.
Scholarships ranging from six hundred to twelve hundred dollars were distributed.
Recipients also received household items donated by Arvest Bank, as part of United Way of NEA’s yearly Day of Caring service project.
Delta Dental also donated hygiene products for recipients.
One recipient says she’s thankful for the program.
“I am very happy, and it will definitely help my family,” says recipient Jennifer Talley. “I’m a single mom and this whole program has been wonderful.”
Director Wendy Stotts says many of their recipients lost their job due to the pandemic.
So, they knew they needed to continue to encourage them even with a drive thru ceremony.
“We’ve had a lot of students lose their income. It was really important for us to congratulate them in person, to let them know to stay the course, stay strong,” says Stotts. “It’ll all be worth it. That was really our goal for today.”
In total, over $39,000 in scholarships were given out.
