With less red kettles this year, Salvation Army of Jonesboro needs your help

With fewer red kettles this year and stores allowing a limited number of people inside, the Salvation Army of Jonesboro is needing your support now more than ever.

“When you look at the overall, the folks coming to us, the need is up across the united states especially in Jonesboro,” Major Jim Lawrence said.

In Jonesboro, they have seen a 30-40 percent increase in need.

With fewer people going into stores and carrying cash, salvation army nationwide could see a 50 percent drop in money raised this holiday season.

Major Lawrence says, many of the bell ringers would usually set up outside of turtle creek mall but since it was severely damaged by the tornado in march, that has limited them in what they can do including the angel tree program.

“We’re asking a lot of the corporations if they would do a corporate angel tree to help us meet the need for the family this coming Christmas. We’ll probably serve 1600 to 2000 people which will be up 30 percent over last year,” Lawrence said.

For Arkansas, ringers will begin the first week in November.

The applications for the angel tree program will open the last week in October.

According to Lawrence they are currently working on set locations for ringers and plan to have those the first week of October.

He says the red kettle and angel tree not only helps them met the needs of others during Christmas time but also throughout the year.

“Any monies that is raised over what it takes us to get through Christmas, then what that does, it goes into a fund that helps us to pay utilities, rent, buy food for the coming year for those who are staying with us, so Christmas is a very important time for the Salvation Army,” Lawrence said.
