Craighead County election officials they currently have over 100 poll workers but are needing more. One lady has been a poll worker for three years, and says although its different, she is looking forward to it.
“My first time doing it, I was nervous I didn’t want to make any mistakes, and everyone welcomed me and after doing it the first time, I loved it. It was really fun with great ladies and gentlemen to work with,” poll worker, Christina Slusher said.
This is a critical year for workers because most workers are over the age of 60 and will not be able to help because of health concerns due to COVID.
the number of absentee ballots request increasing from 700 to 2 thousand this year has also created a problem.
The county needs enough workers to help with the additional ballots to ensure a secure election.
Governor Hutchinson said anyone voting they do not have to wear a mask, and election coordinator Jennifer Clack says they will not turn a vote away.
“We won’t turn a voter away, but I am requiring my staff to wear, at some level. They’ve been given face shields, and masks, if they want to wear both that’s great, but they have to wear at least one,” Election Coordinator, Jennifer Clack said.
Poll workers can receive wages or use the work towards volunteer hours.
The deadline to register to vote is October 5th, early voting beginning October 19th until November 2nd.
Election day is November 3rd.
Clack says funds from the cares act has helped the county purchase enough p-p-e material to make sure all poll workers will remain safe.
“We’re looking forward to still serving everyone. I think the main difference people will see is there may be a little bit more of a wait time. I think we’re going to be able to do well. We’ve got some really well experienced staff and they’re ready to handle it,” Clack said.
