Veterans Village a Pioneer Project

The time has come where homeless veterans in Northeast Arkansas will now have a safe place to call their own and receive the services, they need to better their mental health.

“It’s a true private partnership, out of Mayor Harold Perrin and other visionaries of this area. I decided to ensure that when our veterans come home from defending and fighting for our freedoms that they have a home to come to,” Arkansas Attorney General, Leslie Rutledge said.

This project has been in working for about 2 years. In February 2019, the city received a grant to begin working on the project.

One Navy Veteran attending says there are a lot of homeless veterans that need help and know they will greatly benefit.

“He may be one of the ones that look forward to joining one of these facilities. I am very proud to know that help is on the way,” Navy Veteran, Ray Coleman said.

Veterans Village will be a transitional housing program. Veterans in Northeast Arkansas, local and state officials attending this special day in Jonesboro.

“This veteran’s village is a step towards honoring that commitment we have to them to repaying the debt they are owed,” A-State Chancellor, Dr. Kelly Damphousse.

The village will house homeless veterans, focus on mental illness, and provide a job readiness program to help the veterans reenter back into society.

Right now, there they are still working on 7 of the 9 homes of the village.

It will also include a resource center through A-State’s Beck Pride Center.

“Northeast Arkansas is the heartbeat of America especially when it comes to veterans. From the Beck Pride center to all the CCVMF which is an organization. Without a doubt, I think it’s going to help some veterans get back on their feet,” American Legion Commander Timothy Norman said.

This village is the statement project for other cities in Arkansas to help their Veterans. The project is expected to be complete by March 2021.
