Governor creates police task force after protests

JONESBORO, Ark- In the response to protests around the death of George Floyd, and police brutality, Governor Hutchinson has announced his plans to create a task force set around reviewing police practices in the state.

“I am definitely in support of it,” NAACP Craighead County chapter President Emma Agnew. “ think a review of police departments across the state as well as across the country is a great idea. I’m glad that the protests have actually brought this to light that something needs to be done about the way policing happens.”

Governor Hutchinson said he would sign an executive order today to create the task force.

He says he plans to speak to community members and law enforcement.

He’ll look at police practices and training at departments all across the state, this comes as multiple cities around the country are reviewing police practices.

One Jonesboro woman who wanted to remain anonymous, says she would love to hear more information on the task force.

“I am very interested in learning more and what he wants to do when it comes to the task. I don’t know a lot of information about this, I rather find out more information and how it will help the community and other police officers before whether I can support the task or not.”

Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott says similar talks are happening here in town as well

“When you have a sit down and talk to each other and not at each other, more things can be accomplished and more affective at it,” Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott. “I think it’s a good thing. Here on the local level we have already sat down with our organizers from the first protest. We had a two-hour meeting last Tuesday and have scheduled additional meetings.”

Agnew says the NAACP is also looking into police practices, she says they hopes they will be able to work with the governor on this task force.
