The first sightings of the Highway 18 overpass project can be seen along East Highland Drive in Jonesboro. Demolition crews spent the afternoon tearing down the building that was formerly Sharps Collision Center.
They are also demolishing the facility that was previously a furniture store across the street. This work is part of the Arkansas Department of Transportation’s Highway 18 overpass project to direct traffic along East Highland Drive and Nettleton Avenue around the BNSF railroad crossing.
The project is an expensive undertaking that is expected to cost between 15 and 20 million dollars.
The first phase in the overpass project will be to build a bridge over Watson Street, which will serve as a detour to funnel traffic as workers begin.
Construction for the overpass goes to bid in September and could start in November.
