Some “all-star” bands are heading to Jonesboro soon.
Every year during the fall, thousands of people make their way to Jonesboro for a certain event, the Downtown Jonesboro BBQ & Music Festival.
This year’s 10th annual event is bringing a big change.
They are bringing two major headliners, 90’s rock bands Fuel and Smash Mouth.
“We seem to get bigger and bigger every year and every year at the end of it we get the same comments of ‘well how are you going to do better next year? How are you going to out do it because this was pretty good.’ Well this is our answer to that. So instead of having one band on Saturday night we’re going to give you two great bands over the course of the weekend,” said Jack Turner, event coordinator.
When requesting funding for this year’s festival, the A&P Commission suggested changing the length of the event.
“They said yeah but we’re gonna toss you a curveball? Make it a 2-day event,” added Turner.
The A&P Commission chair, Jerry Morgan says only having the festival one day was not helping increase tourism to Jonesboro.
“The issue with just a one-day deal is that we didn’t get the overnight stays and people would just drive in and drive out real quick. Our goal is to attempt to make this into a multi-day festival,” said Morgan.
Morgan is hopeful that this is just the beginning of growth to come.
“Keep building on the bands, continue to get bigger and bigger names as we go. At some point maybe be able to sell tickets to raise additional funds to bring in some really big high-profile bands and just kinda continue to build on that from this year forward.”
Other than adding the extra day, the festival will stay the same.
Downtown will be filled with BBQ stands, craft vendors, kid activities, and no tickets will be necessary to see the shows.
Mark your calendars, this year's festival will be on September 28th and 29th.
