Jonesboro Shooting Sports Complex Groundbreaking

A shovel hitting the dirt gave Neely Boyd a new hope.

This groundbreaking means she is one step closer to having a shooting sports range in her hometown.

“We’re really excited to maybe be able to come out here a little bit more and get some more real world experience on a real range!” said Boyd.

Boyd is an 11th grader on the Jonesboro Shooting Stars Trap Team.

This new facility will give her team a place to host competitions and a new practice setting.

The complex will have shooting, trap, skeet, and archery ranges.

Now that the ground for the shooting range complex has finally been broken, construction can soon begin; using funds from a $2,000,000 grant from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Construction must be complete by 2020 before the grant expires.

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is just one of the partnerships for this project.

The project is estimated to cost six to eight million dollars total.

The city still needs more money for construction.

Mayor Harold Perrin says he’s not worried though.

He believes with teamwork and partnerships it will get done.

“There’s no question that we wouldn’t be able to do this on our own. We are gonna be going out and reaching out to other public private partnerships to help us pay for the stations, trap stations, and things like that. So, but the enthusiasm for this I don’t think we’ll have any problem whatsoever”, says Perrin.

One of the main goals for the range is to promote gun safety.

Boyd believes this complex will benefit more than just her trap team.

“I just think it’s a great cause for the community to support because not only is it gonna give us an opportunity to shoot here and stay in town but it’s also gonna be a great way to provide kids with firearm safety and the right ways to handle a gun in a great controlled area to do that”, said Boyd.
