Ben Sherman looks just like any other teenage boy.
Unlike other teens though, Sherman had one of his biggest battles when he was just six-years-old when he was diagnosed with leukemia. He was sent to St. Jude where he was treated for cancer for 2 ½ years.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is in Memphis, Tennessee where they treat kids with cancer at absolutely no cost for their family.
Ben Sherman says patients only have one job, “Getting ourselves better. You know, they took care of everything financially, where we were staying. It was just a great experience”.
Sherman is just one of the cancer success stories because of St. Jude.
Thanks to St. Jude Sherman gets to live a normal life doing things he loves like play golf.
There is one fundraiser that is helping to fun St. Jude’s work to give kids like Ben the chance to live a long and full life, it’s the St. Jude S’travaganza
This year marks the 25th annual event. Their goal this year is to raise $500,000. If they reach this goal they would have given 5 million dollars over the last 25 years for St. Jude.
The event is happening this Super Bowl Sunday, February 4th at the old Sears building on Caraway Road in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
There will be all you can eat food, over 50 big screens to watch the big game, and 700 different live and silent auction items.
Buying a ticket gives you access to all that and the chance to help a child in need.
Susan Basley, committee members for the S’travaganza, says every penny will help make an impact, “Whatever difference we make may save the life of a child and for me that hits home. If I can help save the life of one child then I feel I’ve served a good purpose”.
All of the money raised from the event will be donated.
Giving St. Jude the chance to treat children and advance their research leading to higher survival rates. Sherman says he’s seen the rate get better since he’s been there “that number is getting higher, treatments are getting shorter, it just makes it a lot easier on the kids, and the side effects of medicine are getting a lot better from the research”.
If you want to go to the event, there is still time to buy a ticket.
Ticket are available at stjudestravaganza.org.
Tickets are $150 each or $250 for a VIP ticket.
