CRC Men’s Basketball 2017-2018 Season Preview
The Crowley’s Ridge Pioneer Men’s Basketball team will tip-off the 2017-2018 season at the Florida College Classic in Temple Terrace, FL on November 3rd and 4th! The Pioneers will face Florida College and Trinity College before traveling back home to get ready for their home opener against Central Baptist College on November 7th.
The 2017-2018 Pioneers are still a young team with a roster made of four freshmen, seven sophomores, three juniors, and one senior. However, it is important to note that of those seven sophomores, five of them are returners who played several minutes for last year’s team. Even though this team may be classified as young, the sophomores bring more experience that what is the norm for an underclassman.
Unfortunately, the team is dealing with a few early injuries in the preseason. Randy Stanley, a 6’7” Forward transfer from Ecclesia College, has been battling some knee and hamstring issues.
Head Coach Chris Perkins says, “With Randy, we are a really good team. Without him, we do miss him. It hurts our depth inside in the post. We are still evaluating his injuries and hope to have him ready for the Florida trip.”
Perkins then points out, “We have a good schedule. A tough schedule like always, but one that will make us better as the season goes on. The hope is that you can win enough games to make it to the postseason and your schedule is tough enough to get you ready for the postseason. And then hopefully play a lot in March!”
Crowley’s Ridge will look to receive great contributions from a few players this season.
Chris Bernard is a junior guard who will step up into a leadership role. He is a great three-point shooter and the Pioneers will need him to stay hot from beyond the arc this year.
Hunter Turner is the lone senior on this year’s roster. He is also a good perimeter shooter who has the ability to get to the basket and finish strong.
Coach Perkins will also expect a lot out of sophomore Donnie Stapleton in the post.
The coaching staff points out two weaknesses that the Pioneers will need to work on this season: pace of game and decision making. These weak points stem from the young age of the players. In their preseason scrimmages, CRC noticed errors in decision making against a full court press.
Coach Perkins comments, “This will be a point of emphasis in practice leading up to our regular season.”
“I believe this team will get better the more games we play.”
The 2017-2018 Pioneers could be the most athletic team Crowley’s Ridge has had in recent history. The will be able to run the floor well at all five positions.
Team defense will also be a strength for this team.
Perkins adds, “We can defend as well as anyone we will face.”
