Ponder Named SBC Defensive Player of the Week

After helping lead the Arkansas State soccer team to a 2-0 record over the weekend, junior goalkeeper Kelsey Ponder has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Defensive Player of the Week.

Ponder earned the start in goal on Friday as the Red Wolves hosted Oral Roberts and stopped 11 shots in the 3-0 win. The 11 saves are tied for the sixth most in school history, seven of which came in the second-half while she helped protect a two-goal lead.

Ponder now stands at 2-1-0 on the season and has made 18 saves with one shutout. She has moved into fourth on the school's all-time career saves list with 179 and currently has the best career goals-against average of any Red Wolves' goalkeepers.

This is the second time Ponder has earned SBC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Ponder and the Red Wolves will be back in action on Friday for their final non-conference match at UT Martin. Match starts at 7 p.m.
